A Collection of Plants Inspired by the Fruit of the Spirit — Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23

The Fruit of the Spirit are found in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the early church in Galatia. These nine virtues describe what the manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s work looks like in a Christian’s life.

This article is the last in a three-part series exploring the Fruit, as well as corresponding plants that serve as unique, beautiful, everyday reminders of God's truth spoken to us in this verse.

Read the article on the previous three fruit — Patience, Kindness and Goodness — here.

Faithfulness

Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me, O Lord God of hosts; let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel.

Psalm‬ ‭69‬:‭6‬

In this world, it is often easy to lose faith in others and ourselves when we go through pain and hurt. But God is a perfect faithful God who always keeps His promises, and who protects and sustains us through life’s trials. Isn’t that beautiful to know?

The leaves of the Prayer Plant move up and down throughout the day. At night, they fold together to resemble a set of praying hands. When life is uncertain, we can pray and cry out to God, for He is faithful and has a perfect plan for us that we might not always see.

Gentleness

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Matthew 11:29‬

Gentleness is far from weakness, but rather strength under control. God demonstrates gentleness towards us when He forgives us sinners for our wrongdoings.

The Maidenhair Fern gets its name from its small leaves on slender stems which resemble a lush head of hair. Let us rely on God to show gentleness rather than a display of our own strength to others.

Self-Control

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted  beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

1 Corinthians 10:13

In today’s world, it is so easy to succumb temptation when provoked. Overcoming temptation and sinful desires is a constant battle, but we can always turn to God who will give us strength to resist them.

Resisting the urge to touch the prickly Cactus plant takes so much self-control! This small cheeky plant is a reminder of our need for self-control to resist temptations of the world.
